Your access to the world’s finest Wines
Advice & Cellar management

Burns & German Vintners was established as a fine wine trading business combining the experience of Edward Burns, former Trading Director of Armit Wines Ltd and Piers German, former Head of Private Clients at Armit Wines.

With over 40 years of expertise and knowledge in the wine industry, Piers and Edward recognised the need for a wine merchant where the service is personal, professional and tailored to what the customer is looking for from their cellar.

Over many years Burns & German have built up access to the world’s finest wines through contacts both here and abroad and utilising their team’s proven trading skills they ensure that stocks are acquired at the lowest prices with perfect provenance for clients.

Whether you are seeking to drink great wine or lay down a cellar/portfolio with investment in mind Burns & German are ideally placed to advise you, introduce you to new wines and keep you abreast of all that is happening on the international wine market. We welcome visits to our office by appointment and we are very happy to meet clients at other locations.

The Team

Piers German

Following an eight year career in the British Army embracing many roles from active service in the 1991 Gulf War to Second-In-Command of the Life Guards Squadron at the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment in London, Piers entered the Wine Trade as a Private Client Account Manager. Over 9 years with Bancroft Wines, in the City, Piers rose to the main board position of Private Clients Sales Director enabling him to build up a wide network of clients as well as contacts throughout the wine trade and in many of the world’s wine regions.

In 2010 Piers joined Edward Burns at Armit Wines and within a year took over as Head of Private Clients, the leading division of the company and led it until deciding to join Edward in founding Burns & German Vintners in 2013 to advise clients from the UK and abroad on creating and managing the perfect cellars for both drinking and investment requirements.

Gareth Birchley

While studying engineering at the University of Bath Gareth Birchley developed a passion for wine and quickly realised a career in the wine industry was what he wanted to do with his life. On arrival in London in 2006 he took up a role in Private Client sales with City firm, Bordeaux Index. It rapidly became apparent that Gareth had a flair for buying and he became BI’s Burgundy and Champagne Buyer, as well as organising many of their events and dinners.

Eight years later Gareth moved to become the Asian Buyer for Berry Brothers & Rudd, before being promoted to be their Fine Wine Buyer, supplying all channels of the business. His passion for fine wine, especially from Burgundy, the Rhone and Germany, is infectious and it is this enthusiasm that made him a natural choice when Burns & German Vintners looked to recruit a new Buying Director, to help grow the business. Having once been described by Jancis Robinson MW as one of her “stars of the future” in the wine trade, Gareth brings a refreshing enthusiasm and ambition to the company as it moves forward.

Katie Rolph

Katie joined the wine trade after graduating from Warwick University. Initially working at Majestic Wine for five years, in their graduate management scheme, she gained the WSET Diploma in Wine & Spirits, a passion for all things vinous and a well-exercised palate.

In 2007, she joined Berry Brothers & Rudd as a Wine Advisor, and was soon promoted to be the Wine Club Manager in 2008. Responsible for looking after a select group of private clients, she worked with the buying team to choose interesting wines and write tasting notes for the Club’s monthly cases, organised exclusive member events and established a reputation for ensuring that all her customers received the highest levels of customer service.

In September 2019, Katie joined Burns & German Vintners to assist Piers and Gareth in taking the business forward and growing our sales and Customer Reserves.

Henry Matson

It was while collecting a case of wine for his step-mother at Oddbins in Moorgate at 19 years old that Henry became involved in the wine trade, after the shop manager offered him a Christmas job. Eight years later Henry had risen through the ranks, managing the Canary Wharf shop and then expanding the wholesale business across London as a Key Account Manager. From there Henry progressed to looking after private clients at Charles Taylor Wines, learning the intricacies of fine Burgundy. Armed with this knowledge Henry moved on and spent a decade with Farr Vintners, where he not only developed an in-depth understanding of the great wines of the world, but also the requirements and expectations of the customers who buy them.

Most recently Henry was the Head of Private Clients at Armit Wines but he could not resist the chance to join the team at Burns & German, having been impressed by the values we hold, the personal service we offer customers and the level and quality of wines that pass through our cellars. It is the beginning of another exciting chapter for the Company.
